Why choose to see a Hand Therapist?
If you've:
History: the speciality of hand therapy was established in the 1940's during the second world war for the medical management of injured servicemen. Since this time the profession has evolved to treat advanced upper extremity disease, dysfunction and injury. Interdisciplinary treatment/rehabilitation has been developed and replaced the separate professions of Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy when treating hand conditions and therefore a hand therapist can specialise coming from either background.
Therapists who choose to specialise have gained clinical experience and are encouraged to continue with advanced education/independent study. Certifications to recognise these therapists are gained through structured courses and examinations. In the UK the British Association of Hand Therapists (BAHT) was founded in 1984 and the qualification gained is the 'Accredited Hand Therapist' (AHT) certificate.
